As the Focus Group marked its third anniversary in 2023, we reflect on the incredible progress made by our members. An impressive amount of work continues to be accomplished, thanks in part to the introduction of a Coaching program designed to support participants at all stages of their development. This program has empowered members to build their skills and capacities effectively.

“This is a group of very special, loving women whose skills and knowledge sharing are out of this world. Even though I wasn’t very active because of my work, I had the support and courage from the ladies in the Focus Group to keep pushing, to keep learning, and to keep going.”
Maatla Pearl Melamu

The Focus Group coaching program now includes 28 female members from 13 countries: Botswana, Cameroon, France, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tunisia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Senegal. Launched in 2021, the primary goal of this group is to empower female leaders in the Wikimedia and Open movements by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to create gender-equity initiatives. This hands-on, results-driven online training program provides mentorship and guidance to community leaders.

Highlights from 2023

This year has brought new opportunities and successes for the Focus Group, including:

  • Benefits of External Trainers: Inviting external trainers has proven to be highly beneficial for the Focus Group. These sessions, particularly the one focused on central notice banners, played a pivotal role in equipping members with new skills and knowledge essential for their initiatives.
  • Engagement through Member Involvement: Actively involving Focus Group members in hosting sessions emerged as a successful strategy for enhancing engagement. Those who took on hosting responsibilities not only contributed to the knowledge-sharing process but also fostered a sense of ownership and community within the group.

Beyond Coaching: Building a Supportive Community

After three years, the Focus Group has evolved into more than just a coaching program; it has become a safe emotional space for its members. While moments of anxiety and isolation are common in our lives, it is crucial to have a supportive network, and the Focus Group fosters this connection. Members frequently offer encouragement and support to one another, creating a healthy and inclusive environment.

“More than anything else, it is my pleasure to belong to a group of women and girls from different countries and backgrounds who share the same goal. We understand each other, share experiences, and express our opinions openly. I enjoyed the various sessions with our excellent trainers. I especially appreciate our team leaders, Afeq and Nonny, for their organization, team spirit, and dedication.”
